A crystallising polymer solution is applied to the carpet, agitated into the fibres with a counter-rotating brush machine, and allowed to dry. As it dries, the polymer encapsulates soil particles, which are then removed by vacuuming.

Encapsulation dries in 20 to 45 minutes, making it suitable for office areas that need to return to use quickly. It is often used as an interim maintenance clean between annual hot water extraction treatments.
